I had a Tournament!

Hi lads and ladettes,

Long time no see. And well, will be longer again until the next time given that I have just welcomed fester Jnr into this world (that's #2 for those who are counting) and I have all but been stopped playing 40k until 2012. Joy!

Anyway, onto the tournament.

The last weekend of June was the local RTT - Cowcon.

I turned up with the Cursed Ork Army of Doom (aka MVB/Archies/The Ork build). More on the curse later.

Knowing this tournament was a comp'd event, and knowing that for this list to place I had to major win 5/5 games, I had my game face on, big time. The event was also comp seeded, meaning that the first round you played against another player with the similar comp score as you. I knew I was just about the toughest list there, so it was going to be rough.

Game 1: Razor Wolves.

Joy of joy. I drew the lowest comp army there. Razor wolves with long fangs. Luckily, the guy didnt have too much experience with them, and I pushed across the table with ease, and all but tabled him.
Thankfully, I drew a high KP army on the KP mission. Phew.

Game 2: Blood Angels
A hybrid style force that I had actually beat (this exact army and player) at the previous RTT I attended.
Mission was "Milk the Cows", you get one token for each objective you control at the end of your turn. Win conditions are decided by the margin. Once again, major victory.
Highlight of the game for me: He brings a squad of jumpers and surrounds a trukk. He then Wrecks it, Kareen result is the "Explode" equivalent. He loses 2 guys, deliberately takes 2 plebs and breaks coherency, then fails the leadership test and flees. Did you know that you cannot rally if you are not in coherency, and that by the letter of the law, you cannot move in any way but straight back (unless you are blocked of course), even on a run move, to get back into coherency. That basicall won me the game as his nerve was then broken.

Game 3: Thousand Sons.

No, not counts as, legit 1000 sons from C:CSM.
Mission: Escape Capsule. End of Game turn 2/3, a capsule falls from the sky (random location in the middle of the board), only objective. Win margin based on VP's of troops on the objective.
He saw my army, (he and I are good mates regardless), shook my hand and said "I have no chance". I simply said that I had to deal with his Daemon Prince and Greater Daemon, and if I couldn't he won. Those daemons ate all 9 kans, 2 squads of boys and everything else I could find, just to keep them off the only objective.

Game 4: Orks

Another local player, a good tourney player, who I hadn't to this point played. I really was concerned with his list, as I tend to lose against other Ork players.
5 Objectives as per NOVA placing. Major Victory to me again, only after I managed a last turn charge to pull him off one of his two objectives.

Game 5: Footdar

That's right ladies, top table, last game, footdar.
Mission, Spearhead, KP. I knew I had no chance in this mission. I had 22 KP to his 12. He outranged me, out gunned me, and I had basically nothing that could deal with his Wraithlords or his Avatar. Sigh.
Result, massacre defeat.
Turn 1 he took 4 KP off me. This pretty much summed up the game for me. Anything he shot at died in a ball of flame, and no kareen results went my way. Apart from that, yeah, I made a few mistakes, and they hurt. Killa Kans in terrain (all 3 squads) moved 9 inches over 3 turns, running each turn. What can you do when the dice finally fail.

The Curse:
So the curse, I hear you say?
This list has lost only 3 games across 3 tournaments. Each time, it lost to the eventual tourney winner. This list is cursed to be always beaten by the eventual winner.

Regardless, a great time was had by all, and I got knocked from 1st overall at the start of Game 5, to 7th overall, and not even best general (by a long margin).

Da Horde Returnz

I feel terrible for not keeping the blog going, but once more life takes over.

I am going though the 6th month of my #2 bub's pregnancy (no, I'm the Dad not the Mum, but I still have to live with it), a new car we picked up on Friday, starting a new job in 3 weeks and a whole host of other stuff that really is neither here nor there, but all adds up to - I get 1 hr of painting every other night and I haven't seen the value in using it to write a blog post.

Anyway, without further ado, the reason I have been painting is so that I can re-complete the MVB list I am running for this year's Tourney Season.

0/10 Comp, here we come!

fester's ThunderKans

Well, ThunderKan # 1 is going to Brolo, as the Kans finally showeded up.
ThunderKan #2 went to Archnomad, as a gift and started for his army.

This means, fester has 0 ThunderKans.
Or does he?

Still more work to go, namely rivets and detailing, but that baby should catch some bullets :)

ThunderKan #2

Just a real quicky, I have like a day to paint this bad boy for the tournament, its 9.50 pm and my wife will turn up shortly asking for me to go to bed.

Kan # 2 done!

Hammering out my army for Cent

I haven't mentioned it here, but I am loaning my army to a guy for Cent and I had to make a few alterations and speed paint some things.

Brolo of 3++ fame is shipping me 3 kans that were supposed to be here yesterday.
Sigh.

Oh well, digging through a trade I found a new plastic Kan!
Winnah!
So to start on the last 3 models, I have whipped up this.

I dub thee, ThunderKan (I will always try to convince my opponent it has a 3++ save too :) )

Warbuggys Part 2 - Racing Slicks

I am actually still in the hospital
when I took this shot
I recently cut myself fairly badly hobbying, so first and foremost I just want to say:
Be careful of snapped hobby blades. Mine shot out and cut my hand, which you can see to the left here.

Anyway, on lighter news, I have a WIP of new tyres for the buggies!

I got a piece of pipe, 20mm diameter for use as wheels.
In cutting said pipe with a hobby knife I did the damage. I have since bought a pipe cutter.

Anyway, long story short... Warbuggies and comparison shots.
All I have to do is build hub caps and a few rivets and I am done.

Deffkotpa Warbuggy conversion + opinions wanted

So due to 100 things *cough* baby, Centurion, valentines *cough* I am current broke :(
The upshot of which is that the 5 more warbuggies I need for my Pink Bits Battle I will have to build the vehicular mobility features manually.
By this I mean, Wheels and Tracks.

So, I am asking for some opinions on what these look like, and which is better.

I have built a set of tracks and 2 wheels. The tracks are MUCH, much more work than the wheels, but if the consensus is the tracks are better, well, I'll need to suck it up I suppose.

Been busy... painting.

See, when I see a "I've been busy" post usually it can be summed up buy the attached photo...
HOWEVER!
Loyal viewers, this is not the case. For the epic Centurion battle with Pink Bits himself I have to put together a list, and make it good, and probably paint it... So the list was designed, and finalised (todayish).

*note: This is also going to be used in a local comp tourney. They decided to do some Math-based comp, which sums up to: no 3x same squad outside troops, max 2 AV14 vehicles, max 25% points in each FOC, min 40% in troops - to get 10/10 Comp.

The Challenge: Completed.

Finally, it's done!

During the last few weeks, as you all know, I have put some paint on this little fella and made a right mess of this wagon. OK, I lie, I've done a damn good job of it (for my own personal quality, anyway).

I smashed through an Ork a night to get this finished, and I am very happy with the results.

The only issue is that now I REALLY need to redo the rest (4000ish points) of my Orks, to this quality.

Challenge PIP: 97% done, just Orks left

So I have been slogging along with the Battlewagon...

But I couldn't be bothered taking decent photos, yet.

Here are some to tide you over!

The Challenge PIP: The KoptaRolla

So, I have decided its time to coin a new phrase.
KoptaRolla.

This is: Building a Deffrolla out of a Deffkopta.

You all saw the image from earlier showing the bit I intended to use for my deffrolla.
Well if not, here it is.

Well, I added to this with the rotor engine itself on the boom arm.

What I ended up with, I feel, was more than the sum of the parts.

The Challenge: PIP Part 1

Just a quick throwdown.
Painting has begun.
This is the base colour, weathering, darkening around the plates, and general mucking around to be done.

The only decision to be made is how do I do the racing stripe.

I am thinking a single stripe along the top left hand side of the cabin.

The Challenge - WIP 3

So I have started work on the front end of the Wagon, and realised that I have to pretty much stop work now, paint, and then continue modelling. I cant glue the Ram on without painting underneath, so it's tools down for a while.

Anyway, I have decided to mock up where I am at to get an idea of what needs doing... and I ahve one, a really, really bad one...

The Challenge WIP 2

So to set the scene: We have 3 players.
1. Zog (here represented by my finger as this wont be glued until painted). He is driving the crane.
2. The Mek. In the foreground of the above picture, weilding a spanner and a "precision tool" - lump of steel pipe.
3. Grub (in green). A Mek's helper.

It goes something like this:
Mek: "Oi Zog, dis way!"
Grub: "Oi Zog, da uvva way!"
Zog: Huh?

The Challege WIP 1

Wow, just wow. I am in love with this Kit.

I have put together a Russ, a few rhinos and plenty of infantry, but nothing has been anywhere near the quality of this kit. It is astounding.

It's kind of like finding that amazing dish hidden away in the chinese restuarant you always ordered Mongolian Lamb from. You wonder where your life was before this point, and what you have to do to get it back so you can experience this more.

Anyway... WIP.

fester's Orks: The Challenge

So to my shame, I turn to my battlewagon kit, and break the shrinkwrap. This is the first Xmas present to see the modelling table.
Now, why do I do this to "my shame"... the music playing in the background is The Final Countdown by Europe.
The shrinkwrap comes off, and I get that feeling of awe cracking this baby open.
You see, in my gamin history, I have cracked maybe 6-7 actual boxsets for my 6-7,000 points of armies.
I have decided that I am not just going to throw this together, and that I am going to make the most of this kit.

Silence is golden

Well things have been quiet here as I do my 3++ content, but for once this is going to be updated before the same post gets pushed over there.

I have found some new focus with my Orks, and hope to put them together (and do some other toys too) by Centurion in March.

On to the filler content I mean hobby update!

This is my Trukk, which is a Gorkamorka Trukk sandwiched between 2 Leman Russ tracks from an old Looted Russ I had laying around.

The match of a lifetime...

Mirror Match!
This Sunday, presuming my now fevered wife (as in, she has a 38.7 degree C temp) gets better, I will be playing a match against my dead friend, and whipping-boy co-worker Wonna. You can see the results of our last bout... here.

Basically, with this one-of-chance to get to the LFGC (club) I suggest to Wonna that instead of me trouncing his Guard again, we might swap armies and see if we can each teach the other some tactics, and generally try something different.

Now before I go any further... I hate Guard. So boring to play against. Worse than Green Tide. At least as a Green Tide player you get to make algae jokes.

This post is both a helper post for me for later, when I do my Battle Report, and a warning to Kirbs that its gunna go up on 3++ as well.

Codex Orks Review

Just a quicky, check out my Codex Orks review as it is written on 3++ is the New Black
The first post should appear in about, oh, 90 minutes.

And remember, Orks is da best.

Battle Report: 1750 Orks vs Tau

So, I have gone in for a rematch against BohicaBob at 1750. He decide to bring a full-foot Tau army (which wont win any hardcore prizes) that he is trying out, and I have modified by QM3 list to fix some deficiancies I had found.

Bob's List:

ShadowSun
Shas El
2 x 3 Suits (missile/melta set, missile flamer set)
3 stealth suits
2x 12 firewarriors - one with EMP nades
Kroot (14+6 hounds I think)
8 Vespid
2x2 broadsides. 1 set with SMS, 1 with plasma

My List:

HQ
Big Mek, KFF, Cybork Body.
Warboss, Bike, Attack Squig, PK, Bosspole, Cybork Body

Elite
7 Lootas

Troops
5 Nob Bikers + Painboy. 2 PK, 2 Big Choppa, Waaagh Banner, Bosspole
20 Boys, PK Bosspole
20 Boys, PK Bosspole
Dread, 2 RL

Fast Attack
2 Deffkoptas, RL
2 Deffkoptas, RL

Heavy
Dread, 2 RL

3 Kans with Grotzookas
3 Kans with Grotzookas
Basically, the photos all turned out POT but we worked on trying a Centurion game.
Win condition:
Table Quarters
KP (5x5 Stelek style)
Objectives
VP

Spearhead Deployment.

I chose his both his broadsides, Kroot, Vespid and the Flamer Suits
He chose the Troops Dread, All the Kans, and the Deffkoptas.

I won first turn. Deployed.
He decided to full-reserve his army.

I scouted my Deffcoptas 24 inches.

First Turn Orks
I pushed up as fast as I could.
First Turn Tau
He changed the turn counter from 1 to 2.

Second Turn Orks
I line about half his board edge to force his army to come on closer to the bulk of my force. I know he can jump-pack over me, but his broadsides and kroot (2 of the KP's), cant.
I bring the rest of my army towards the open flank.

Second Turn Tau
Yay! Things happen!
On come some suits (MP/Melta), walking firewarriors, and the Shas el.

Much shooting later, including point blank shots into the Deffcoptas..
Nothing happens. The Shas el even charges and nothing happens.

Third Turn Orks
The nob bikers lose the warboss who goes off to help out killing the shas el (who turns out to have FNP) and creams him in CC. The rest move along the board edge and shoot the firewarriors. The Lootas shoot the suits, as does the Dread and the Kans. The Suits run away from shooting and off the board.
Third Turn Tau
On comes shadowsun, the vespid (I think) and stealth suits. Shadowsun charges the Coptas (after failing with shooting) and the Stealth suits try to shoot the warboss, who shrugs off the wounds. The Deffcopta manages to Hit-n-Run. On the other flank, the unthinkable happens.
Firewarriors.
Charge.
A dreadnought.
Vespid killed off the other squad of Deffkoptas.

I killed one, and they stayed.

Fourth Turn Orks
I kept on moving up. The warboss charged shadowsun and the koptas into the stealth suits. Orks win, and consolidate.
I load the Vespid full of Grotzookas. 26 hits, 21 wounds. No more vespid.
Nob bikers shoot a little more and dont do much as they roll up and down the board edge.

Fourth Turn Tau
Warboss eats a railhead bolt and rolls over.
Dread eats an EMP grenade and ends up killing (by exploding and attacks) all but 1 firewarrior.
Kroot outflank and shoot at the boyz a bit and kill a few.
Move Tau stuff comes on and cant shoot anything

Fifth Turn Orks
Kept pushing up to the Tau line.
Kans charged the Broadsides and they strategically (at the Tau players bidding) killed the broadsides.
Nobs went back for some firewarriors behind them. Shot a little and did SFA.
Fifth Turn Tau
Orks have a conversation with some firebreathing Crisis Suits and lose.
Broadsides cant kill Kans at point blank range.
Firewarriors cant hurt Nob Bikers.
Crisis Suits charge the Orks they flamed and all die. The suits that is. I rolled a crapload of dice and most were 5's or 6's.

Sixth Turn Orks
I cleared the board.
Tabling.

Jobs done.

Rolled for Turn Seven on a 4+... 2
This was to get all the bonus points.

Table Quarters: 4/0
KP: 5/3
Objectives: 2/0
VP: 1750 / 705

Thoughts: Stelek's 5x5 make knowledge of the gaming environment and the enemie's army much more important.
